Accomplishing Communicative Goals
Communication graduates are effective as leaders in change management. They collaboratively work with others to problem-solve situations.

S- I am a member of Second Baptist church, and I am also an active member of the Impact Ministry. While serving on the 2nd and 4th Sunday every month, I have the privilege of working with other members of the church and using positive communication skills to reach out to or connect with new visitors and new members.
T- To collaborate with other members of the Impact Ministry to ensure new visitors and members feel welcomed. Make sure that any information they need, I am ready to give or find for them. Communicate in a way that will lead to relationship building and long lasting connections. In addition, represent the church well by making sure visitors and new members feel heard and seen in order to increase their faith and the desire to have a relationship with God.
A- I arrive at church about 30 minutes earlier on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month to serve on the Impact Ministry. I will sometimes stand outside in front of the church or stand in the front foyer to kindly welcome and greet visitors and members as they are coming in. If I notice an individual or family that are first time visitors, I speak to them and offer them the option of filling out a contact form. I let them know that it is completely optional. I show them the QR code they can scan with their phones that has the contact form link. I explain that this will allow the church to stay connected with them and allow them to know what events or activities are going on at the church. I also answer any questions they may have about the church. If I don’t have the answer, I make sure to find the person who does. I always tell them to enjoy service and my name if they want to speak to me later. If there is a need for prayer or anything else, with visitors or members, I communicate that to someone in the Prayer ministry.
R- Built relationships with new visitors and members. There is growth in the number of people joining church due to their first connection with someone from the Impact ministry. Through my positive communication skills that are demonstrated on those Sundays, I have been able to reach communicative goals and actually see how my communicative goals have had a positive impact on the church ministry

S- Since August of 2023, I have been working as an office manager and I have been working in client support for a local behavioral health group. I work with mental health therapists and clients who are in need of mental health services. I work from home most days and will only go to the office when it is necessary for clients or clinicians. I have to utilize other means of communication through phone, email, and Zoom to stay connected and collaborate with staff and clients.
T- To think of a way to retain clients and decrease the number of clients who are missing appointments and canceling appointments.
A- I noted different ways clients could be retained and I also noted different options that could possibly cut down on clients missing or canceling appointments which led to clinicians missing out on several services and payments. In our weekly staff meeting that takes place on Thursdays at 3pm, I presented my notes to the director. I said we need to make sure we collect the $25 deposit up front when clients schedule appointments. I explained that when most people pay a non refundable deposit, they will go through with services because they don’t want to waste money. I also expressed that the clinicians should start charging their clients cancellation fees and give them a 24 hour to 48 hour window to cancel or reschedule their appointment before they are charged. I revealed to the staff that many of the clients are missing their appointments due to their lack of understanding of how to join their sessions online or via telehealth. I typed up a document that the clinicians can use to send out to potential clients who may be confused on how to join their sessions when they are not seen in person. Also, when couples call to terminate a session, I always ask to see if maybe one of them would like to continue individual sessions.
R- Clientele has increased. Since presenting this in the staff meeting, clinicians have seen a big change in retention. The revenue has also increased because many clients are paying deposits upfront, so even if they cancel, the clinicians still get a payment, even if it is small. Encouraging the clinicians to communicate with their potential clients on how to join their online sessions has helped them retain clients as well. Collaborating with the director and staff of the group through communication has helped the whole organization reach their goals.
